DISABILITY ACCESS AT THE OLD SCHOOL
The Old School is a refurbished Victorian guest house and community hall. We are located in Old Wolverton, between the towns of Stony Stratford and Wolverton. There is parking for users of the Guest House provided on a private driveway, as well as a drop-off bay and one disabled parking space for the Community Hall.
The house and hall were built in 1856 and whilst we aim to meet the needs of all our guests there are some period features which might make access difficult for people with limited mobility.
In the Guest House we have one ground floor bedroom and accessible bathroom, but small steps and narrow doors could make access to these spaces challenging.
Dogs are welcome in the Guest House when booked as part of the ‘The Railway Room’ and may also use the common areas downstairs.

The nearest bus stop is 0.3 miles away. The stop is called ‘Harnet Drive’ and is on Stratford Road. The nearest railway station is Wolverton station which is 1.3 miles away.
There are several local taxi companies, including Starline (01908 770770) and Skyline (01908 222111). Ali’s wheelchair taxis provide specialist transport (01908 382422).

Arrival and Car Parking
Arrival time is usually from 15:00. If you need access earlier please get in touch and we will do our best to accommodate you.
There is no need to let us know when you are arriving. Instructions on how to access the keys to the house and your room are included in the welcome emails you will receive
There is parking for up to three cars on our flat tarmac drive, with only a few steps to the front door. However, in order to access the drive in front of the house you, or someone travelling with you, will need to open the wooden gate to the driveway, move your car into the driveway, then close the gate again behind you.
Should you require extra assistance, it might be possible to leave the gate open for you. Please mention this when you book and we will do what we can to help.
Entrance into the house is via a door into a small lobby. There is a small step up into the house.
From the lobby you can access the downstairs bedroom, the stairs and the living room. As no one lives in the guest house permanently there is no doorbell.
Guest Accommodation – Public Areas
The living room, kitchen and a downstairs bathroom are on the ground floor. You can access them through the right hand side door as you enter the house. There is a small step from the living room into the kitchen and then again into the downstairs shower room.
All public areas have normal light switches for communal lights, with backup emergency lights.
All public areas have smoke detectors connected to the fire alarm. The evacuation procedure is displayed in all rooms.
There is a Guest Information Folder in the living room which contains further information about the appliances and other equipment in the house, as well as information about the local area. The folder also has emergency contacts for the local Health Centre and Hospital.
All bedrooms have their own bathrooms, but these are not always directly connected to the corresponding bedrooms.
All bedrooms remote controlled televisions, tea and coffee making facilities and bottled water.
The house is centrally heated throughout but temperatures can be adjusted in each room to suit individual requirements.
Ceiling lights, desk and bedside lamps are in all rooms.
Cotton sheets and synthetic duvets and pillows are used.
Some clothes storage, a dressing table and seating is in all bedrooms.
All bedrooms have smoke detection heads connected to the fire alarm. The evacuation procedure is displayed in all rooms. In the event of a fire the fire alarm will sound. Please follow evacuation procedures. There are two fire extinguishers in the living room. If you have any mobility or hearing disabilities, please inform us on booking.
Ground Floor- Bedroom 1 (The Railway Room)
The downstairs bathroom can be accessed by walking through the hall, living room and kitchen and requires about 30 steps. There are two small thresholds of a few centimetres. The downstairs bathroom is a wet room and offers access for a wheelchair. There is also a toilet and a sink.
The Railway Room has a queen sized bed, which can be accessed from both sides.
The Railway Room is the only room which can accommodate dogs. For further information about pets please consults the Guest House Terms and Conditions. We will do our best to clean daily, but won’t be able to guarantee that there is no pet hair in this room.
First Floor- Bedroom 2 (The School Room)
In order to access the first floor, you have to climb 12 steps up a carpeted stairway with a handrail on the right and left. The stairs are steep. There is no lift and we encourage guests with less mobility to book the downstairs bedroom (The Railway Room).
The School Room is on the left at the top of the stairs and has two single beds. They can both only be accessed from one side.
There is a step up into the room.
The shower room for The School Room is on the other end of the first floor corridor: You leave the room, step down onto the top of the stairs, step back up onto the right hand side landing and open the door into a small corridor. From here there are 10 paces straight to the shower room door.
The bathroom is equipped with a shower, toilet and sink.
First Floor- Bedroom 3 (The Works Room)
The right hand door at the top of the stairs leads to a small corridor. The Works Room is on the right hand side, seven steps along.
The Works Room has a double bed which can be accessed from both sides. This room is a little smaller than the others, so movement can be a bit restricted.
The Works Room has its own ensuite bathroom, which consists of a shower over a bath, toilet and sink. The bathroom can only be accessed through the Works Room.
We offer a small continental breakfast which needs to be booked in advance. The breakfast consists of normal and gluten free toast, butter, jam, honey, cereal, muesli, fruit and milk. We might be able to take special requests but can’t guaranteed that they can be fulfilled. Please get in touch before you book if you have any questions.
The kitchen and communal areas are open to other residents of the house, as well as staff and the students from Slated Row School, who will clean the guest house. As a result we cannot guarantee that any the areas will be free of allergens, such as gluten or dog hair.
There is a community fridge in the kitchen. We are happy for you to refrigerate any medication. Please make sure that it is labelled as such. As the kitchen is a public area we cannot take any responsibility for the loss of any items you store here. You can also keep perishables in the fridge, but they need to be removed at the end of your visit.
