HERITAGE OPEN DAYS 2020

This September, we’re celebrating welcoming the community back to the Old School with some extra special and completely FREE events as part of Heritage Open Days 2020.

We hope you’ll join us as we explore this year’s theme of Hidden Nature through a variety of activities and events for all the family.

Our cafe will be open for all the events too, serving an extra special ‘Back to the Old School’ menu, and we’ll be bringing our online shop into the real world with lots of fabulous things for you to buy.

So that we can manage capacity in line with Government regulations, booking is required for all events. FREE tickets can be ordered via Eventbrite: http://oldschoolwolverton.eventbrite.com/

All events take place between 10.30am – 1.30pm

The cafe will also be open from 10.30am – 1.30pm each event day (you do not need to be attending an event to use the cafe).

EVENT DETAILS

WILD TIMES

Friday 11th & Saturday 12th September

While the people were away, the animals came to play! Come and see what creatures we caught roaming around the Old School on our motion sensitive cameras, and discover more about the hidden nature all around us. Expert ecologists, Bernwood will also be on hand to answer your questions about our local wildlife and talk you through their collection of fascinating natural objects.

Also at this event will be Lorraine Wasden, founder of Milton Keynes’ very first Hedgehog Sanctuary, Hedgehog Haven MK. Lorraine will be on hand to tell you all about these fascinating creatures, what to do if you find one in distress, and how you can make your garden hedgehog friendly. Lorraine may even have a spiky friend with her for you to meet (though this will depend on who is in residence at the Haven at the time)…

CELEBRATING SEWN TOGETHER

Friday 18th & Saturday 19th September

A way of bringing the community together during lockdown, ’Sewn Together’ has been a series of projects creating community textile artworks out of pieces made individually by community members at home. We started with a community quilt and then moved on to lockdown merit badges, and we have more planned too before the end of the summer. This exhibition will display the finished pieces for the first time and give participants a chance to meet in person to celebrate their achievements.

If you’d like to take part in a Sewn Together projects, head on over to the Sewn Together page or join the facebook group to find out what we’re up to now – there is still plenty of time to get involved!

RAMBLING TALES

Friday 11th & Saturday 12th September

Join us on these guided walks through the local countryside with storyteller Philippa Tipper. Starting out from the Old School, each walk will follow in the footsteps of local residents, taking in our favourite trails and finding moments and landmarks in the landscape that have taken on special meaning for people in recent times.

The walks will end back at the Old School, where the cafe will be open for those wanting a post-walk cuppa and slice of cake.

Do you have a story to tell or memories to share about the walks you’ve taken this year? If you have roamed the countryside near the Old School (the Ouse Valley Park, Grand Union Canal and surrounding area), we’d love to hear from you. We’re looking for stories, photos, memories, and moments gathered through your walks; serious, sad, funny or heartfelt. We want to share snippets as we take a ramble through the landscape.

Check out the Rambling Tales page on Facebook or drop us a line to tell us about the things you got up to

FOREST SCHOOL

Saturday 12th/Sunday 13th & Saturday 19th/Sunday 20th September

Get a little taste of Forest School-style fun with some outdoor activities for families to enjoy together, in the Old School Wildlife garden on Saturday and Sunday mornings during Heritage Open Days. Take part in the hidden nature scavenger hunt, make a pie in the mud kitchen, weave your way through our ribbon maze, and make your very own glow worm to light your way home.

Families with children of all ages are welcome to take part, though activities are especially suited to little ones.
